Just as customers rely on their sellers to perceive and respond to the changing trends in automation, automation systems depend on sensors to detect and react to environmental changes to stay updated and ensure accuracy in their processes. Article by Festo.

Sensor technology, an indispensable component of the world of automation, requires high quality components to ensure maximum productivity in machine processes. The best sensors are those that are highly sensitive to change and have little influence on the factors they measure.

Along with size, there are many factors involved in ascertaining whether a sensor is apt for the required function. When picking out a sensor that is most suitable, a customer looks for one that is simple to handle, has less cables, and is protected against environmental influences such as hit, shock, splash waster and oil. Festo’s first-class sensor systems address all these concerns while guaranteeing a smooth and efficient production sequences.  Compatible and exchangeable with competitor products, Festo’s wide variety of industry-specific sensors have robust designs that ensure high functionality and reliability.

Made with the most innovative technologies, the SOOE and SDAS-MHS are high-quality sensors that offer a first-class experience to their users through their precision and reliability. These sensors are Industry 4.0 compatible and are equipped with IO-Link – the future sensor communication standard, with point-to-point connection between sensors and actuators, that has gained a lot of ground in the last couple of years.

SDAS-MHS Position Transmitter And Programmable Cylinder Switch

Designed as a 2-in-1 product, the SDAS-MHS doubles as an IO-Link position transmitter in cylinder switch size and a cylinder switch with two programmable switching points. No longer needing to install two cylinder switches, buyers save time and cost with this single source sensor. Equipped with a state-of-the-art capacitive teach-button, the SDAS-MHS allows for a faster and safer set-up, as compared to manually adjusting two conventional cylinder switches. This robust interface makes it possible to directly programme PNP/NPN on the device thus reducing part numbers and versions to stock.

Despite its dual functionality, the SDAS-MHS is remarkably compact yet it offers up to a 40mm detection range with two programmable switching points. The small size of this position transmitter makes it possible to provide continuous position feedback on especially small drives like compact cylinders and grippers. With its ability to uninterruptedly track movements of pistons and deliver the information via IO-Link, customers with Industry 4.0 requirements benefit greatly.

As a solution provider with high competence in cylinder switch manufacturing, Festo ensures that the SDAS-MHS position sensor is compatible with high-temperature environments and is welding immune. Furthermore, with no norm or standard on cylinder slot and cylinder magnets, cylinder producers are free to choose shape and dimension of the slot as well as the magnetic field strength of the piston magnet. With the intelligent sensors on Festo drives, customers receive guaranteed functionality.

Self-sufficient: Optoelectronic Sensor SOOE

One of the smallest distance sensors around, the SOOE, has inbuilt LEDs making it a self-sufficient light-sources with visible wavelengths. The sensor is able to take on various mounting positions to detect the presence or absence of objects (eg: parts or workpieces) in specific positions when the light beam is interrupted or when the intensity of the reflected light changes. Cost-effective and durable, the SOOE is superior to other laser diodes as it houses both the advantages of LED and laser while being safe for the eyes. It is also competitively priced at a rate cheaper than some competitor sensors.

The SOOE is ideal for customers in various industries such as general automation technology and special machine manufacturing as it is able to detect objects at distances ranging from 1mm to 20m while perceiving contrasts. Its precision distance sensors are based on multi-pixel technology (MPT) that produce the best possible results for object detection thanks to precise signal evaluation. Furthermore, the miniature sensor offers a compact, standard and integrated solution for all optical object-detection functions with PNP and NPN available in a single device. Not only is the SOOE simple to operate, it has a reliable and stable detection that paves the way for shorter delivery times.

As with many of Festo’s sensors, the SOOE is also well compatible with Industry 4.0 applications and ensures investment security. IO-Link permits consistent communication down to sensor level, making it possible to fully exploit the intelligence of the SOOE. Downtime and time consumed in troubleshooting are also reduced with the ability to diagnose the ambient temperature of the sensor, making it possible to improve throughput and quality.

Just as sensors complement and enhance the functions of an automation system, Festo too aims to provide users with the best instruments to increase efficiency and help attain desired results. Besides smart sensors, the company has a wide range of conventional sensors that include, but are not limited to, proximity, pressure, flow, optical, vision system and flow sensors. Its full range of smart and conventional sensors are capable of precise and reliable sensing to collect highly-accurate data.
